Our Free Teach-IT Lesson Idea : Tour-IT

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

This free lesson idea taken from our fantastic Teach-IT 2 resource. Tour-IT is an example of how you can use Google Earth to create exciting and engaging virtual world tours using the application. You learn to use layers to visit a historically accurate area in Europe and then record the tour so you can play it back or use it as a resource for differentiation in your classroom.

The focus of the tour is visiting Hitler’s ‘Eagles Nest’ and exploring it in 3D. Of course, like all our resources, you are not limited in the scope of where you can apply the methods we suggest – you can use this idea in many subjects across the curriculum.

Please give it a look, download and pass it on to colleagues – as long as you enjoy the resource and find it useful we don’t mind. If you have a minute, why not leave us a comment or join us on our Do-Be social network.

Free Teach-IT Lesson Ideas

Friday, June 8th, 2012

One of the great things worth shouting about here at Do-Be are our FREE Teach-IT lesson resources. We have a number of free lesson ideas taken from our successful Teach-IT and Teach-IT 2 packs. They are great for dipping into and trying out with your class or for personal CPD. This year I attended a CPD event focused on our new curriculum hosted by Education Scotland and was pleasantly surprised to see them promote an ICT tool for developing literacy and engaging through the use of ICT. That tool was Wordle. (From Teach-IT 1).

You can download our FREE Wordle-IT lesson resource from this link and try it out for yourself – the applications are endless and the results produced are fantastic for display on classroom walls and notice boards.

Free Teach-IT Lesson Ideas

Now that our holiday weekend has come to an end we wanted to share with you one of our great Teach-It Lesson Resources. As with all our resources, it is produced in a ready-to-use format mirroring our Teach-It range of products.

Free Teach-It Lesson Resource – Measure-It

Monday, May 28th, 2012

Time for a recap of our lesson resources available that are a sample of our Teach-IT resource.

This weeks free lesson resource comes once again from our great Teach-it pack. Here you will learn some advanced skills in using Google Earth, incorporating numeracy using the measurement tools within the program.

Feel free to grab your free copy of the resource and give it a try – as usual, your comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.

Prezi-IT and PowerPoint

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

One of our great Teach-IT lesson ideas was Prezi-IT. This free lesson idea shows you how to use the PowerPoint busting Prezi web software to build a spinning, zooming and flipping interactive presentation to really wow your learners.

Prezi can be used both for in-person and online presentations, and is used for everything from standard business communications to school projects to resumes; the company says its ten million users create a new presentation every second. The service may be best known for its use at TED conferences — here’s TED honcho Chris Anderson using it to conduct a talk on Web video at a 2010 TED event…

As it turns out, what Prezi is introducing doesn’t really amount to turning PowerPoints into Prezis. Instead, you import all the slides from a PowerPoint into Prezi, and can then drag some or all of them into an existing Prezi presentation. Once they’re there, you can zoom and pan around them just as with any Prezi element. Everything is editable, so you can tweak text, delete items and move stuff around.

Give it a try and let us know how you get on.

Fantastic Partnerships that Keep on Growing

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Do-Be are delighted to be working in partnership with a fantastic cluster of schools in Fife – Balmullo PS, Kettle PS, Falkland PS, Freuchie PS and Ladybank PS. Kirsten first met with Sarah Else at Balmullo Primary over a year and a half ago.

Sarah had been looking for a resource to encourage her staff to look at the possibilities of open source tools and use the tech she had deployed into school. Sarah was one of the first schools in Fife to purchase Teach-IT. Neighbouring schools heard about the resource and were keen to see what Do-Be offered. Now all five primaries have access to Teach-IT 1 and 2. The head teachers now see Teach-IT as an invaluable resource to unlock fresh thinking using ICT in their classrooms every day.

Last Friday we worked with every teacher in every school. The course was tailored to meet their needs. Teachers were wowed by Stephen and encouraged to try out tools such as Google Earth, Prezi and Audacity. We’ve had some great feedback ;

‘Thoroughly enjoyed Friday’s session – inspirational stuff. I am sure staff will be keen to try out some, if not all, of the ideas shared’.
Gillian Knox, HT Falkland Primary

‘My staff are all really enthused and all enjoyed the training and are keen to start using the material.
Great morning despite the ICT gremlins that live in schools.  Thanks for a super training please pass on thanks to Stephen’.

Jenny Adamson, HT Kettle Primary School

‘Stephen was very engaging and coped well with any of the technical glitches that occurred.
It really stimulated staff interest in thinking more broadly about how we can use IT across the curriculum. It was a great morning and extremely useful.
Looking forward to seeing the outdoors stuff’.

Sarah Else, HT Balmullo Primary School

As ever we are delighted to be working in a further five schools in Fife and see this as a lasting partnership. We look forward to introducing Teach-IT Outdoors to the cluster in January next year.

Are you keen to deliver a unique CPD programme in your school? Give us a call and we can arrange a meeting to discuss what exciting opportunities we can offer.

Facing the Winter Term Head On

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

The great thing about the October break up here is that it comes hot on the heels of the September Weekend and the School Summer Holidays.  The problem is that it leaves us teachers with a long hard slog to the Christmas break.  At the time of writing it is 59 sleeps until Christmas.  That is only 3 wage slips away and round about 48 or so lessons to plan in primary and about 288 lessons to plan on a 6 period day as a lesson teacher!

Thank goodness Do-Be have given us a head start!

You can find all our FREE LESSON IDEAS from the last 5 months over on this page and if you take a browse through our blog you will find other little golden nuggets for you to try in class.

Keep your eyes peeled on the blog too over the next little while as we will giving you more exciting news about Teach-IT Outdoors as its launch date grows ever closer.

Right, heads down until Christmas guys!

Resources to help you teach about the Scottish Election

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

We are lucky in the UK that we live in a democracy.

On Thursday 5th May 2011, the fourth election for the Scottish Parliament will take place. The purpose of election is to choose Members of the Scottish Parliament for the next four years.

Teaching about democracy and about how the Scottish Parliamentary elections work is an important aspect of a young persons education in both primary and secondary schools. We think it is really important that everyone votes and we also think that one of the reasons that so few young people vote is because they don’t really understand the process.

We have been surfing the web to find some of the best resources to help young people understand a little bit about democracy and the elections in Scotland. Don’t forget to share any resources that you have found by using the comments function at the bottom of this blog post.

BBC Democracy Live (Scotland) – A selection of links, resources and video about what goes on in the Scottish parliament.

Voting and the Scottish Parliament (1.18MB pdf) – a leaflet explaining how to register to vote, what is involved and how a person’s vote will count. It also talks about the 2011 referendum.

Teaching Resources from the Scottish Parliament – a Varity of teaching and learning resources from the Scottish Parliament Official Website

BBC Guide to where the power lies between Holyrood and Westminster.

Citizen X is a good resource from the BBC on democracy, rights and responsibilities. Be carful as some sections are specific to the English National Curriculum and Westminster Government.

The Scottish Parliament General Election 2011 on Wikipedia provides lots of great graphics, links and information. You can also guarantee it will pretty much be the first site to be up-dated post election to provide a reference summary of results.

The various social media channels of the main Scottish Political Parties also make great learning and teaching resources we have pulled together a list of links here.
